2011 Show Wrap-Up

I have been to most of the National conventions since San Antonio. I had never made the trip to Joelanta. Boy, have I missed out. This show was amazing from the activities, to the salesroom, the hotel and it's staff, the Atlanta crew that put it on and so on and so on. It didn't matter if you were new to the deal or not everyone made everyone else feel right at home especially the boys from Atlanta! David, Mike, Buddy, Marten, Brian and all the other guys were great and were as fun to hang out with as they were helpful to attendees. The atmosphere was welcoming and very laid back and there weren't too many rules (or dress code) which can sometimes be a drag. The flow was great, tons of interesting stuff to do the entire time, and the sales floor was unbelievable. If it was vintage it was there. I could have dropped way more than I did easily. This was by far one of the best Joe conventions/shows on all levels I have ever attended. Thanks to everyone for making it that way. Can't wait till next year. David

After dinner, we drove over to Area 51, I mean, the warehouse. I love that place...I want a job there! Lots of cool stuff to see and the preview of the diorama just overwhelmed me. Mike and Steve are gifted artists. I can truly say, this was the absolute best convention I have ever attended. My heart was sad to leave. It felt like I was leaving a family reunion and I'd have to wait a whole year to see my loved ones again. You see, that's the core draw of Joelanta. Sure, collecting joes is fun and all the events are a riot but, the family I have gained is the best part. Don

Crazy as it sounds, Radio Cult was one of my favorite parts of the show this year. Second only to Hot Coffey and the Creamers.

I know that we often use words such as "great," "excellent," "the best," "WOW," etc., to describe many events, but I find that we sometimes use these terms too freely. Such is not the case, though, for my first JOElanta experience. It was EXCELLENTLY, AWESOMELY, FANTASTICALLY, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!!! After reading of all of the fun others had at the 2010 JOElanta show, I knew I wanted to attend. After learning of the dates for the 2011 show, I made my room reservation. As I drove into Atlanta on Friday afternoon, I still didn't know what to expect. After all, I had not met any of these guys before, and they all knew each other. I wondered if I would simply be left out, as old friends reunited. From my first time in the lobby of the Marriott, I realized that the folks who organize and attend JOElanta are extremely friendly and welcoming. As we started gathering in the lobby, I noticed that no one was a stranger. Some of these guys only knew me from the Trenches, but they made me feel right at home. It was great to finally meet so many folks from the Trenches. Like others, I won't try to name them all, for fear of missing someone. Let me say, though, it was a pleasure to meet everyone that I did meet. I must let everyone know that Friday evening's activities was a very fun part of the overall weekend experience. The food and company at dinner were great, and it's not everyday that one is invited into the laboratory of the "mad scientists." Not only did we get to see a sneak peek at this year's diorama, but we also saw some other interesting items, among of which was a 1:1 Luke Skywalker Land speeder! If you ever get the wonderful opportunity to attend a JOElanta, I encourage you to make it in for Friday's events. Gordon

Thanks to the Joelanta crew for putting this show together. When this started 11 years ago I don’t think any of us dreamed that it would have grown to the level of popularity as it has today. I have said many times over, there are shows and events annually for our hobby, but Joelanta is the heart of it all. Marten, David, Mike, Steve, and so many others . . . all you guys should take a bow for organizing this show. It is truly a pleasure to attend and support not only the hobby but the Cody Lane Foundation. You guys are our family and we miss you already. Scott
